Collecting Tee Shirts

Monday, July 28th, 2008

Astros9The tee shirt became the canvas upon which the history of popular culture and music was written. The graffiti tee shirt did the talking, with occasional pieces of text that mourned how those underground ideas were ransacked, distributed and undermined by big business. The revolution was put on a T-shirt and turned into a multi-million-dollar business.T-shirts of the past were once souvenirs of moments, events and personalities that seemed culturally significant have become merely souvenirs that are ironic or sincere, tacky or expensive, elitist or vulgar of a shopping trip.

Tee shirts of the past were once a highly prized limited-edition promotional item available to a select few. These are now hunted down by avid collectors as if they might bring back lost youth and crushed optimism. One Jimi Hendrix T-shirt recently sold for $5,000.

That well-worn “Tommy” T-shirt that commemorated The Who’s album and you have stuffed into a box in the back of your cupboard might be worth more than you think.

Some music tee shirts are seen as alien relics from the 20th-century vinyl age, with an allure remotely from their counter-cultural roots. Teenagers now wear T-shirts from the 60s and 70s that led to their freedom, even if it is only the freedom to shop or buy a comfortable cool tee shirt emblazoned with images of glamorous defiance.

They might not have lived through the fantastic birth of rock ‘n roll but, like most tourists, they bought the T-shirt.

Now wearing an aggressively controversial tee shirt is just an impassive and knowing act of nostalgic cultural obedience as ever before.

What is Whole Life Insurance?

Monday, July 28th, 2008

Business 9Ordinary life insurance is straight life or traditional whole life, a type of permanent insurance that guarantees your death benefit for the rest of your life, while providing cash value that you can access for any reason. This type of insurance policy similar to a with-profits policy or a participating policy that pays dividends. Money accumulates as you pay your premiums in an account and grows with interest and often with dividends paid directly by the insurance company. Your premium amount is guaranteed to remain level for as long as you live, even if the insurance company’s costs rise, with whole life. When you reach retirement or old age, that premium will not increase over the amount started in your policy.

An insurance company will calculate the level premiums sufficient to pay the cost of your insurance coverage or mortality costs to the end of your life. In the early years, the level premiums are higher than the mortality costs. This difference is called the cash value which is the difference between the mortality costs and the level premiums. In later years, as mortality costs rise due to your advancing age, your level premiums are lower than the mortality costs, and your whole life insurance policy draws on the cash value to help pay the insurance costs. If you continue to keep up your premium payments, your cash value will eventually grow to an amount equal to your policy’s death benefit. But if you die at any time before you reach the maturity date, your beneficiary receives the full death benefit, no matter what the amount of your cash value at the time of your death.

Your cash value can be used at any time as long as there is some money in the policy. Whole life insurance accumulates cash value as savings. Part of each payment accumulates in this account and continues to grow tax deferred as long as the policy is in force. You can access up to your cost basis without any income tax consequences. However, surrender will terminate all or part of your coverage and may have tax consequences if you have had any gains in your policy.

The cash value build-up is creditor proof in most states which makes whole life insurance a sort of double indemnity policy by protecting your family should you die suddenly, as well as protecting your family should you be sued or have to declare bankruptcy. If you ever feel that you are unable to continue making premium payments, or that you have more coverage than you need, but you do not want to surrender or take a loan against the policy, you have a number of alternatives. Based on the size of your cash value account, you can use your cash value to purchase what is known as reduced paid-up insurance, whereby your coverage amount is lowered and no further premiums are required. Or, you could turn the cash value into extended term insurance, which would provide the same level of death benefit you now have, but for a limited period of time.

Traditionally, most people bought life insurance through an agent that would come to their houses and present them with options for whole life insurance. More often than not, the agent was working for only one company, sometimes using scare tactics and high pressure salesmanship to guilt trip a customer into buying a policy. With the rise of the internet, consumers are now free to research different types of policies from different companies in an unbiased manner. On the other hand, the internet has long offered term life quote comparisons available instantly without any expert consultation. However the nature of whole life insurance is more complicated because it is permanent and includes a personal savings element. As such, finding the best whole life insurance online requires the ability to compare companies and policies without bias, as well as access to highly knowledgeable life insurance professionals. BeamaLife.com is an industry recognized website for the best whole life insurance online and provides whole life insurance quotes free. They can also provide you with term life insurance quotes and Universal life insurance quotes.

How to Help a Cancer Patient | Cancer Hats

BeauBeau 6Each year, 182,460 women are diagnosed with breast cancer and 40,480 die. That means that 1:8 (12.5%) women either has or will develop breast cancer in her lifetime. It is not just women that get breast cancer, 1,200 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer and 400 will die this year.

This is just a little bit scary to say the least. Most people reading this have had loved ones or friends that have been diagnosed with breast cancer. Would you do to help them?

There are many gifts that are appropriate for cancer patients and their families to give encouragement and show support.

Probably one of the most important gifts you can offer is the gift of your time. Time to listen, time to be with them as they accept the fact that they have cancer and go through their treatment. That treatment may change their appearance with loss of hair and/or weight. To alleviate problems with hair loss you might try getting them cancer hats, chemo hats, cancer bandanas, cancer head coverings. These can be found under various names like the BeauBeau™.

You might get them a notebook so they can write down their thoughts, their struggles, and their accomplishments as they fight this battle.

Do not forget a nice stuffed animal they can hug during treatments. Stay away from scented items though, some cancer patients sensitivity to fragrance. So no perfume for the ladies and no aftershave for the gentleman.

Just remember, all they need is to have someone to talk to or hold their hand, just be there for them!

Just for your information, if detected early, the 5-year survival rate for breast cancer will exceed 95%. The best early detection method is a mammogram, yet 13 million U.S. women, 40 years of age or older, have never had a mammogram. So, if you or a woman 40 years or older, do not put off that mammogram again.

What is Air Charter? Part 2

Monday, July 28th, 2008

Airplane6Last month reviewed the options of Air Taxi, Ad hoc, Membership or Public Charter and what they mean. Now it is decision time. You need to figure out which one is correct for you.

Now, since the air taxi is designed more to provide a point-to-point air service over relatively short distances as well as to non-serviced airports you will need to look at where you are going on a regular basis. The business road user is usually the target for air taxi services rather than the established charter market. Air taxi companies usually use turboprop aircraft, offering a no-frills service and allowing the customer to either purchase a single seat or charter the entire aircraft. More recently, with the advent of Very Light Jets (VLJ’s). There is increasingly more private jet charter aircraft in this market.

If you fly in frequently or even just once in a great while then use ad hoc charter for the airlines. This would fall in the lines of more of a luxury jet charter. Something that you would enjoy on a vacation. These companies are usually governed by less stringent regulations than those designed for scheduled airlines.

If you do not have the capacity to operate your own aircraft and you fly frequently than the membership program would probably be your best solution. And if that frequency of flying is even higher you might consider fractional ownership. This can provide you with an executive jet charter service that will help your business grow.

Now the full or public charter is mainly for tour operations. These companies look to provide scheduled charter flights in the form of packages for holidays, vacations, or the occasional gambling trip to Vegas.

An aircraft charter company takes care of all the functions of aircraft operation, leaving you to concentrate on business or enjoying your flight. Just remember, enjoy your flight!
